Our history
Steeped in history, YWCA of Lincoln has been a leader and driving force for human empowerment in the Lincoln community since its founding in 1886. The enterprise that now serves more than 5,000 persons each year began with twelve couples who wanted to provide protection for women and aid them in achieving self sufficiency. Over the years the agency has housed women, and was among the first in the nation to provide technical and trade skills courses for them. Many individuals and community groups championing women’s rights and the end of discrimination have found a willing partner in the YWCA. In the 60’s and 70’s the face of positive change towards fair and equal treatment regardless of race in Lincoln was the YWCA.
The agency today
YWCA of Lincoln continues to be a vital community agency that addresses critical social problems. YWCA programs have an important impact on the development of disadvantaged children, the incidence of drug and alcohol use and pregnancy among high risk teens, leadership and empowerment for adolescent girls, and the self-reliance of women in economic crisis.
